Extensions: Extensions are granted on different categories of visas.
The requirements of each category are as given below
1) TOURIST VISA:
“This visa is usually granted
for the sole objective of sight seeing, recreation, casual visit to meet
friends and relatives etc.” This
visa is non extendable even
in the case of Indian origin. Those
who are on 5/10 years ‘Tourist’ visa can stay in India only
up to 180/ 90 days continuously (as per stipulated period).
However, following cases would be
referred to MHA, New Delhi for extension and visa conversion -
(A) Tourist
visa may be converted to ‘X’ visa, if a foreigner who has come to
India on ‘Tourist’ visa marries an Indian national during the validity
of his/her Tourist visa. Such
conversion would be considered subject to fulfillment of following
conditions:
(i) submission of a copy of registered Marriage
Certificate, and
(ii) report from the concerned local Police station
about their marital status which will inter-alia include his/her
antecedents, confirmation about their living together and security
clearance.
(B) Tourist
visa in case of minor children of Indian citizens or Persons of Indian
Origin, who were otherwise entitled for ‘X’ visa but have entered into
India on Tourist visa, may also be converted to ‘X’ visa co-terminus
with valid visa of either of their parents.
(C) Tourist
visa of the foreigners who fall ill after their entry intoIndia rendering
them unfit to travel and requiring specialized medical treatment can be
converted to Medical visa if they are eligible for grant of Medical visa
and medical certificate is obtained from government / government
recognized hospitals. In
such cases, “Tourist” visa of attendant accompanying the foreigner
(whose ‘Tourist’ visa is converted into Medical visa) can be converted
into Medical Attendant [Med X] visa co-terminus with the Medical visa of
the foreigner.

2) EMPLOYMENT VISA : Documents to be submitted for registration and extension
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Though, from the date of arrival, the departure would be within 14 days when entered on fresh visa still the process of Registration is compulsory.
c) Prescribed registration and extension forms. (to be filled on computer terminals at this office)
d) Four passport size photographs. (4cm × 4cm with clear background, ears distinctly visible, without spectacles and caps.)
e) Resident permit book available at office for Rs 25/-
f) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), page bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration
g) Copy of Indian visa.
h) Terms and conditions of the contract of assignment including salary position, tenure of employment.
i) Undertaking in the prescribed format on the letterhead of the company, duly signed by authorised signatory mentioning name and contact number, taking responsibilities of the foreigner during his / her stay in India and to repatriate the foreigner at their cost if situation arose.
j) Copy of Indian passport / copy of election card of a person signing undertaking.
k) Copy of P.A.N. card and Income tax papers for current assessment
year alongwith Challan of TDS deposited in Bank.
l) Forwarding letter of concern company with specific reason for extension. (Duly Signed by authorised signatory mentioning name & telephone number)
m) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill / Telephone bill / Leave & Licence agreement / Company accommodation proof.
n) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
o) As per new guidelines of Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi,
“Employment" visa can not be extended beyond the period of 5 years
from the date of issue of original visa. Thereafter, the foreign national has
to leave the country and re-enter on fresh visa. Employment visa beyond
its initial validity period may be extended by the FRRO up to a total
period of five years from the date of issue of the initial ‘E’ visa on
a year to year basis, subject to good conduct, production of documents in
support of continual employment, filing of IT returns and no adverse
reports on the foreigner from security point of view.
p) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest .
3) PROJECT VISA: Project visa is granted to foreign nationals coming to India.
For execution of project in the power and steel sector subject to
fulfill the requisite conditions. The foreigners coming on ‘Project’
visa will have to register himself/herself with the FRRO/FRO concerned
within 14 days of
arrival, if the visa validity of visa is for more than 180 days. If the
visa validity is 180 or less registration would not be required
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Though, from the date of arrival, the departure would be within 14 days when entered on fresh visa still the process of

g) Copy of Indian visa.
h) Terms and conditions of the contract of assignment including salary position, tenure of employment.
i) Undertaking in the prescribed format on the
letterhead of the company, duly signed by authorised signatory mentioning
name and contact number, taking responsibilities of the foreigner during
his / her stay in India and to repatriate the foreigner at their cost if
situation arose.
j) Copy of Indian passport / copy of election card of a person signing undertaking.
k) Copy of P.A.N. card and Income tax papers for current assessment
year (at the time of Visa Extension).
l) Forwarding letter of Concern Company with specific reason for extension. (Duly Signed by authorised signatory mentioning name & telephone and mobile number).
m) The copy of the intimation to the local Police
station, if the applicant is residing in Private House/Flat in a
building/Society as a Tenant/Paying guest.
n) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
4) BUSINESS VISA: Documents to be submitted for registration and extension.
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Prescribed registration and extension forms duly filled. (to be filled on computer terminals at this office)
c) Four passport size photographs (4cm × 4cm with clear background, ears distinctly visible, without spectacles and caps.)
d) Resident permit book available at office for Rs.25/-
e) Letter from the person or firm (in India) with whom foreigner intend to do business, mentioning type of business, volume of business in current year, etc
f) Copy of bill of lading or invoices
g) Undertaking in the prescribed format on the letterhead of the company, duly signed by authorised signatory mentioning name and contact number, taking responsibilities of the foreigner during his / her stay in India and to repatriate the foreigner at their cost if situation arose.
h) Bank remittance showing that he / she is a person of assured financial standing
i) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), page bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration.
j) Copy of Indian visa.
k) Copy of P.A.N. card and Income tax papers for current assessment
year alongwith Challan of TDS deposited in Bank.
l) Copy of Indian passport /copy of election card of a person signing undertaking.
m) Contract or assignment letter with company.
n) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill/Telephone bill/Leave &
Licence agreement.
o) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
p) As per new guidelines of Ministry of Home Affairs, New Delhi,
"Business" visa can not be extended beyond the period of 5 years
from the date of issue of original visa.
Conditions for extension of ‘Business’ visa -
1) The foreign national should be a person of assured financial standing.
2) The gross sales/turnover from the business activities for which the foreigners has been granted visa is not less than 1 Crore per annum (to be achieved within 2 years from the setting up the business)
3) The foreign national should not be visiting India for the business of money lending or fur running a petty business or petty trade or for full time employment in India, etc.
4) The foreign national shall comply with all other requirements like payment of tax liabilities etc.
5) The foreign national should not be an undesirable person and not the subject of a black list or any warning circular or other restrictive list;
6) First extension on Business visa shall be granted by the Ministry of Home
Affairs, New Delhi.
7) Further extensions, if required, may be granted by the State Governments/UT administrations/FRROs/FROs on year-to-year basis continued business activity and no adverse
inputs, security related or otherwise, about the foreigner.
8) The period of extension shall not be beyond five years from the date of issue of the ‘Business’ visa.
9) If the extension of visa is denied by MHA/FRRO/FRO/State Govt/UT Administration, the foreigner shall leave India forthwith on expiry of the period of validity of the visa.
q) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest . Thereafter, the foreign national has
to leave the country and re-enter on fresh visa.
5) STUDENT VISA: students coming to India to pursue full time regular
academic studies in recognized and Government approved educational institutions.
Documents required for registration and extension.
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Bonafide certificate from School, College or institute for the academic year mentioning nationality.
c) Four passport size photographs (4cm × 4cm with clear background, ears distinctly visible, without spectacles and caps.)
d) Proper bank remittance i.e. bank statement showing that the applicant can support himself /herself financially during his/her past stay of one year in India.
e) Marks sheet or passing certificate for the exams passed in the last academic year.
f) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), page bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration.
g) Copy of Indian visa.
h) Resident permit book available at office for Rs.25/-
i) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill / Telephone bill / Leave & Licence agreement.
j) Attendance proof or certificate for regularly attending classes in cases of application for extension.
k) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
l) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest .
6) ENTRY(X) VISA : A
foreigner of Indian origin, his/her spouse and children staying in India
on a ‘X’ visa, who are eligible for a 5 years multi-entry visa, may,
on an application be granted extension of stay up to five years from the
date of initial entry under intimation to MHA provided that such persons
have not come to any adverse notice, and are not citizens of PRC
countries. The
initial validity of the Residential Permit shall not exceed one year which
may be extended on year to year basis up to 5 years from the date of issue
of visa, if further extension is required, the proposal may be referred to
MHA for clearance. MHA
would grant extension for one year after the expiry of the initial period
of 5 years. Subsequent
extensions, if any, up to a total period of anther 5 years may be granted
by this office.
Those
who are on ‘X’ visa are not permitted to Employment and Business in India.
Documents required for registration and extension
(A) Those arrived on Entry (X) visa –
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Prescribed registration and extension forms duly filled. (to be filled
on computer terminals at this office)
c) Four passport size photographs (4cm × 4cm with clear background, ears
distinctly visible, without spectacles and caps).
d) Documents proving that applicant is of Indian origin i.e. parents or
grand parent’s Indian passport or birth certificate, copy with proper
linkage of relations.
e) Spouse passport and visa copy showing that he/she is employed in Mumbai
for cases in which other spouse and children are accompanying him in
India.
f) Resident permit book available at this office for Rs.25/-.
g) Marriage certificate duly solemnized/registered in India in cases of
married to Indian nationals & Seeking extensions on “Spouse
Indian”.
h) If marriage is taken place abroad, Marriage Certificate is to be
authenticated / Certified by the concern Indian Mission abroad.
i) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), bearing
arrival stamp of Indian Immigration
j) Copy of Indian visa.
k) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill/Telephone bill/Leave
& Licence agreement.
l) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be

m) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest .
(B) Those born in India
a) Original valid Passport.
b) Prescribed registration and extension forms duly filled. (to be filled
on computer terminals at this office)
c) Four passport size photographs (4cm × 4cm with clear background, ears
distinctly visible, without spectacles and caps.).
d) Documents proving that applicant is of Indian origin i.e. parents or
grand parent’s Indian passport or birth certificate, copy with proper
linkage of relations.
e) Copy of Mother’s / Father passport, visa and residential permit in
case parent s are registree of this office.
f) Undertaking in the prescribed format, (On letterhead of the company in
case of either of his/her parents are registree of this office and on
‘Business’ or ‘Employment visa duly signed by authorised signatory),
mentioning name and contact number taking responsibilities of the
foreigner during his / her stay in India and to repatriate the foreigner
at their cost if situation arose.
g) Copy of Indian passport / copy of election card of a person signing
undertaking.
h) Forwarding letter of concerned company (in case of either of his/her
parents are registree of this office and on ‘Business’ or
‘Employment visa).
i) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill / Telephone bill /
Leave & License agreement / Company accommodation proof.
j) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be
asked for in certain cases.
k) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest .
7) RESEARCH VISA : Documents required for registration and extension
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Letter from the concerned university giving details about the subject of research and in what field
c) 4cm × 4cm with clear background, ears distinctly visible, without spectacles and caps.).
d) Letter from the concerned nodal ministry/HRD ministry granting clearance if seeking extension.
e) Letter from ministry of Home Affairs granting permission.
f) Resident permit book available at office for Rs 25/-
g) Letter from the professor and guide under whose guidance the research thesis is being done.
h) Bank statements showing financial status for the past one year of stay.
i) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration.
j) Copy of Indian visa.
k) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill / Telephone bill / Leave & Licence agreement.
l) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
m) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the

8) JOURNALIST VISA : Documents required for registration and extension
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Prescribed registration and extension forms duly filled. (to be filled on computer terminals at this office)
c) Letter indicating the subject of journalism from concern news agencies, company.
d) Four passport size photographs (4cm × 4cm with clear background ears, distinctly without spectacles, caps.
e) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration.
f) Copy of Indian visa.
g) Resident permit book available at office for Rs 25/-
h) Letter from P.I.B or Ministry of External Affairs, (external publicity Division) (XPR) section granting permission during time of extension.
i) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill/Telephone bill/Leave & Licence agreement.
j) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
k) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest .
9) MEDICAL VISA/ Mx Visa : Persons coming to India for
medical treatment for serious illness are issued with this visa. The
foreigner has to register with the FRRO, Mumbai office within 14 days of
arrival (In case of Mumbai jurisdiction) irrespective of visa validity.
The documents required
are as follows :
a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Letter from concerned hospital (should be eminent and recognised hospital) where treatment is being taken along with supportive medical documents/Diagnostic test reports (with tentative period of treatment).
c) MX (Medical X) visa for caretakers and relatives accompanying patient.
d) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration
e) Copy of Indian visa.
f) Visas and all medical papers and diagnostic test reports.
g) Proof of Residence i.e. copies of Electric bill/Telephone bill/Leave & Licence agreement.
h) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
i) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest .
10) RETURN VISA : This facility is only granted to students for returning to their home countries during vacations three times in a academic year and to those foreigners who are on employment and business visas and their cases have been referred to Ministry of Home Affairs New Delhi by FRRO Mumbai office for further extension and are under consideration. Return visa applications should be process and 3 days prior to date of Journey.

c) Two passport size photographs (4cm × 4cm with clear background ears, distinctly without spectacles, caps.
d) Copies of passport (photo page) and (page indicating validity), bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration and resident permit.
e) Copy of Indian visa.
f) Copy of return ticket within 90 days of departure from India.
g) Request letter from company in case of “Employment/or Business visa.”

j) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the
applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society as a
Tenant/ Paying Guest .
Return visa is granted for a maximum period of 90 days
