made operational on 8th March 2004. It imparts basic training
to the officers posted at different Police Stations and has
trained 842 officers till date.
Objectives of Mumbai Cyber Lab - To impart basic training in
cyber crime investigation to the officers of Mumbai Police..
Functioning: -

NASSCOM. It has one server and nine state of art computers.
One officer from Cyber Crime Cell along with one computer
trained constable has been attached to the Lab. NASSCOM pays
for a Project Manager, who is the over all in-charge of the
lab. Training is imparted by cyber cell officers and
volunteers selected by NASSCOM /students from Bombay
University.
Training content:-
A programme is taken out in advance seeking nominations for
officers. Accordingly police stations nominate officers and
ten are trained every week. Special courses are run on demand.
Thane, New Mumbai Commissionarates, Anti-Corruption Bureau
Mumbai also avails of the facility .Besides basic training in
hardware and software, following topics are covered in
details;

learning.
Duration of the training
:- The basic training consists of six days followed by an on
line test.
Feed back : - The six days training programme on cyber crime
investigation is followed by an interactive feed back
sessions. It is heartening to note that nearly 100%
participants have found the training to be very useful.
Recent decisions :-
It has been decided to give specialized training in
investigation of cyber crime to a few selected officers for
developing a pool of core competence at Zonal and Regional
levels.
It has also been decided to keep a separate slot for a
special course for the officers of Cyber Cell to enhance their
skill. It has been noted that officers of Cyber Cell/MCL are
so busy in day to day work that their own knowledge is slowly
getting out dated. Therefore, the need for their specialized
training
To conduct a week long workshop on ethical hacking to
understand the mind of a hacker and to keep pace with recent
trends.
Mumbai Cyber Lab has completed two years
and has been working as an extension of Cyber Cell. It has
been noted that while registration of criminal cases is very
low, the officers are mainly kept busy in enquiries involving
misuse of internet. Mumbai Police along with NASSCOM
celebrates Cyber Safety Week every year. This is another
avenue for interaction amongst Police officers and I.T.
companies with special reference to cyber security. Mumbai
Cyber Lab and the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell actively
participate during the week long celebrations in imparting
knowledge on cyber security to students in school, colleges,
to parents, industrialists, bankers, as well as police
officials. The excellent quality of work of Mumbai Cyber Lab
in imparting training to Police officers and creating
awareness on cyber security has indeed made it an excellent
example of public private joint venture.
